Set in the year 2005, this animated film follows the Autobots and Decepticons as their war for Cybertron extends to Earth. A new, colossal, planet-devouring entity named Unicron threatens to consume Cybertron and all life in the universe. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, must unite to face this unprecedented threat, but their ranks suffer heavy losses, including Optimus himself. The Matrix of Leadership is passed to the young Autobot Hot Rod, who must rise to the challenge and become Rodimus Prime to lead his comrades against Unicron and the newly powered Megatron, now Galvatron, in a desperate battle to save their home world and prevent galactic annihilation. The film features intense battles, new characters, and a darker, more emotionally resonant tone than the television series.
